Orphan Prevention? What?

There’s a concept that is getting more and more press lately as the church and the world are “waking up” to the fact that there are 143,000,000 children in the world who are orphans.

That concept is pretty simple, it’s called Orphan Prevention.   What can we, as people who care about children all across the world, do to help prevent more of them from becoming orphans?

No, I’m not talking about praying for miracles with regard to the health of sick parents (but on second thought, why not?)

I’m talking about things like:

  • Medical clinics to improve the health of the entire community.
  • Clean Water initiatives.
  • Educational Sponsorship Programs.
  • Medical Visa programs for both adults and children who can’t get the care they need in Haiti.
  • “MicroLoan” entrepreneurship programs.
  • Craft Export businesses – some day I’ll tell you the story about the first time I went in the store at the Haiti Baptist Mission – changed my view on things forever.

In short, it’s anything that could enable the children in Haiti to remain connected to their biological family.

Obviously, there are a huge amount of different ways that the concept of orphan prevention can be carried out.    That also means that there are a lot of opportunities for people to make a difference.

More to come, stay tuned……
